Dangerous cold weather is expected to impact the region this weekend as a strong arctic cold front moves through on Saturday morning. According to officials, the incoming cold air mass will bring strong northwest winds and much lower temperatures.
Forecasts indicate that wind gusts could be strong enough to cause isolated power outages. Residents are advised that small craft should remain in port due to hazardous conditions on the water.
There may be snow flurries for a few hours along and behind the front, but no significant travel impacts are anticipated.
By Sunday morning, continued strong winds combined with very low temperatures will result in widespread single-digit wind chills. Officials warn that if winds are stronger than currently forecasted, wind chill values could fall below zero.
Temperatures across the area are expected to drop into the 15-20 degree range on Sunday morning, creating a high risk of damage to pipes and property. A hard freeze is also predicted for Monday morning.
“This cold outbreak will rival similar cold outbreaks in late December 2022, early January 2012, and mid-January 2011,” according to authorities.
