Cobb Schools issued the following announcement on Jan. 20.
On Thursday, the Cobb Schools Board of Education approved the purchase of $100 million of short-term construction notes, which will allow the District to move ahead with construction projects at the beginning of the year and could result in substantial savings due to rising construction costs.
For example, construction crews are already working on Ed-SPLOST projects at Sprayberry High School.
So, the bridge funding could help advance the construction of Sprayberry’s new gym and CTAE upgrade, and other Ed-SPLOST projects happening throughout the District while capturing savings in the current construction market.
“Any time there are savings for tax-payers and an opportunity to accelerate construction projects for Sprayberry, it is a win for the District and the entire Cobb community,” said Board Chair David Chastain.
Following the Board’s approval, the District can also move ahead with the purchase of 25 new air-conditioned school buses, which are being funded in part by Ed-SPLOST. The buses will replace older buses.
As a result of recent changes to the District’s public health protocols, and their impact on accurate COVID-19 case counts, Superintendent Chris Ragsdale announced that the District’s COVID-19 Tracker will now post the weekly total of all confirmed cases.
Other Board business focused on the public comment portion of future meetings. Beginning in February, the sign-up for public comment at BOE meetings will return to an in-person sign-up on the meeting day.
The Board also approved the retirement of the District’s Chief Academic Officer, Jennifer Lawson. Her retirement will be effective June 30, 2022.
