Charles Ray Knight was born on December 28, 1952, in Albany, Georgia. He grew up in the area and attended Dougherty High School and Albany Junior College. His early years in Albany set the stage for his future in baseball.

Knight was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1970. He made his Major League Baseball debut in 1974. Knight played for several teams during his career, including the Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros, New York Mets, and Baltimore Orioles. He is best known for his time with the Mets. In 1986, Knight earned World Series MVP honors after his critical role in the Mets’ win over the Boston Red Sox. His clutch hits and key moments in Game 6, including scoring the winning run, cemented his place in baseball history.

Knight also managed the Cincinnati Reds for two seasons in the 1990s. Later, he worked as a broadcaster for ESPN and the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network. Knight has remained connected to Albany, where he lived with his family. In 2013, Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany named a street after him, calling it Ray Knight Way. Knight’s legacy continues to be celebrated in Albany and the baseball world for his contributions both on and off the field.
