Phillip LaDon Phillips Jr. was born on September 20, 1990, in Albany, Georgia, to Phillip Sr. and Sheryl Phillips. He grew up in Sasser and Leesburg, Georgia, and attended Lee County High School. He later graduated from Albany Technical College in Industrial Systems Technology, though he missed the ceremony due to his commitments to American Idol.

Phillips started playing guitar at 14. His interest in music grew under the guidance of his brother-in-law, Benjamin Neil. In 2009, he formed the Phillip Phillips Band and played in local venues. In 2010, he won the local singing competition “Albany Star.”

Phillips gained national recognition when he won the 11th season of American Idol in 2012. His coronation song, “Home,” became the best-selling song by an Idol winner. Phillips’ debut album, The World from the Side of the Moon, achieved platinum status and spent 61 weeks on the Billboard 200.

Throughout his career, he performed with artists like John Mayer and the Goo Goo Dolls. He continues to write and perform music, with his most recent album, Drift Back, released in 2023.

Phillips remains connected to Albany, Georgia, where he was born. He has supported local causes, including performing for the Phoebe Hospital Foundation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
