Phoebe issued the following announcement on Mar. 4.

Nine members of the Phoebe Family fanned out to classrooms at Deerfield Windsor School Lower Campus Friday morning to read books to students as part of Read Across America Week.

“When children see adults reading, it shows them that reading is important, and we also want children to see the joy and fun in reading. Reading is wonderful and can lead to a lifetime of learning,” said Marie Knight, Lower School Director.

Phoebe employees also read to classes at The Family Tree and to students in the Dougherty County School System at Lincoln Elementary Magnet School and Northside Elementary School. The volunteer project was organized by the Phoebe Diversity Council.

“Phoebe Putney Health System’s Diversity Council is proud to partner with local schools to read to children because we believe in the power of education and the power of community,” said Jennifer Williams, PhD, Phoebe Corporate Director of Diversity, Inclusion and Engagement.

The National Education Association established Read Across America Week in 1998 to promote a love of reading in children. National Read Across America Day falls on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Suess.
