CITY OF ALBANY: Sewer Overflow

Sewercover

City of Albany issued the following announcement on July 28.

On the evening of 7/27/21 at 7:50 PM the City of Albany experienced a sanitary sewer spill near Lift Station 26 along the east side of the Flint River just downstream of the Oglethorpe bridge. The spill was due to heavy rainfall in the area where for two consecutive fifteen minute periods rainfall amounts of 0.87 inches and 1.26 inches were recorded with total rainfall for the hour being 2.45 inches. An estimated 16,000 gallons of diluted sewage was discharged from a manhole and then to the Flint River approximately 100 feet south of the bridge. All lift station equipment functioned as designed but was overwhelmed by the deluge of rainfall in the area. Once the rainfall slowed, the pumps were able to catch up and the overflow ceased.

Sampling of the river has begun. EPD and the local health department have been notified. No City of Albany drinking water systems were affected.
