City of Newton issued the following announcement on Oct. 13.
Georgia Bridge and Concrete will reconstruct the 84-year-old Frontage Road bridge over the Yellow River. This $3.065 million I-20 Exit 88 interchange area project requires a 270-day closure and detour beginning Monday, Oct. 18.
Drivers will be detoured along I-20 during construction.
Local traffic will still have access up to the work zone. All business or residential driveways shall be maintained during construction. The detour is for thru-traffic.
Travelers are being asked to use the following alternate routes:
- I-20 eastbound and westbound lanes
- Heading eastbound, take Crowell Road to east Brown Bridge Road and then Turner Lake
- To gain access to the other side of the bridge, travel north on Almon Road, east on Mount Tabor, south on Cook Road, west on Old Atlanta Highway then south on Old Oxford Road
The project begins approximately 550 feet west of the existing bridge and extends east 550 feet for 0.27 miles. As proposed, the 320-foot long by 43.25 –foot wide bridge includes two walls along the approaches south of the road to minimize impacts to the pump station and trailer park.
Official completion is expected in fall 2022.
