This holiday season, the Phoebe Foundation will honor local cancer patients and their families with its annual Lights of Love tree lighting ceremony. Carole Marchant, a cancer survivor from Sylvester, has been named the honorary tree lighter for Phoebe Worth at the November 30 ceremony to be held on the hospital campus.
When Carole Marchant flips the switch to illuminate the thousands of lights on the Lights of Love tree at Phoebe Worth, she’ll be right at home. She has been a member of the Phoebe Family for 47 years and currently serves as Supply Chain/EVS Manager and Biomed/IT Coordinator. “I’m fully dedicated to this hospital,” said Carole. “I love the people here. I love the patients. They’re the reason we’re here. And I love the whole health system as well.”
In 2017, Carole went to the ER with incredible abdominal pain, cramping and bleeding. She ended up having emergency surgery, which revealed a rare mixed Mullerian tumor of the uterus. “The signs were there, but I ignored them,” said Carole, who has an extensive history of cancer within her family. “I should have listened. When your body’s telling you something, don’t ignore it.
While Carole underwent several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, she continued to work. In fact, she says many of her coworkers didn’t even know she had cancer. “I’m just the type who needs to stay busy. So, I just kept working. I think it helped,” added Carole.
Carole is now in remission and credits that not only from the support and prayers of her family, friends and coworkers but her medical team as well. “From my GYN doctor, Dr. Graff, to my Phoebe Worth family and everyone else at Phoebe, including Dr. McAfee and his staff, were phenomenal. I had my chemo at Phoebe Worth Cancer Center in Sylvester, and I have to say Dr. Gadde and everyone at that clinic showed my family and me such compassion,” continued Carole.
The other honorary tree lighters are Sam and Kara Shugart, of Albany, at Phoebe Cancer Center and Alex Riccardi-Turner, of Americus, at Phoebe Sumter. Started in 1983 by the Junior Woman’s Club of Albany, Lights of Love has since raised more than $1 million for cancer services and patients at Phoebe Cancer Center. This year’s donations will benefit the Light House, a place of respite and comfort for cancer patients throughout southwest Georgia as they prepare for and undergo treatment.
The Lights of Love trees are special for their symbolic white lights in memory and honor of individuals. For each light purchased for a suggested $25 donation, a card is sent to those honored or to family members. To donate, call 229-312-GIVE or visit lights-of-love.org.
