DEERFIELD-WINDSOR SCHOOL: 5th Grade Celebrates Patriots Day

Istock 000004035897 medium

Deerfield-Windsor School issued the following announcement on Nov. 29.

Why America Is Free is an interdisciplinary and immersive curriculum for 5th grade, the time to teach the American Revolution and the founding of the nation for the first time. At this age, students are old enough to think abstractly, analyze rationally, apply ideas, and make emotional connections. Equally important, they are still uninhibited enough to play freely and imagine themselves in the world of the 18th century.

The annual Patriots Day event allows fifth-graders to dress in full Colonial costume and spend the day in a colonial-style environment that includes academics, crafts, food, customs ... even military training for the boys and serving tea and sewing for the girls. The event is the culmination of an all-subject curriculum fifth-graders at the school have been participating in called "Why America is Free."

Utilizing a grant funded by the Albany Chapter of the Colonial Dames, Deerfield-Windsor Lower School students have been learning about colonial history, including Patriot life, the Revolutionary War, and important people during these times. Students also have been learning about art, science, music, trades, and customs of our forefathers ... among other aspects from that era. They will even get a visit from a local blacksmith.
