In the 2024-25 school year, Worth County Elementary School counted 254 African American students, reflecting a 5.8% increase over the prior year, reports from the Georgia Department of Education show.
Total enrollment at Worth County Elementary School was 687 students in 2024-25. African American students represented 37% of all enrollees, making them the school’s second-largest student group.
The school is part of the Worth County School District, headquartered in Sylvester.
Among the district’s five schools, Worth County High School had the largest number of African American students in 2024-25, enrolling 292 students.
Georgia’s public schools served more than 1.7 million students, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. Enrollment figures were highest in elementary grades with 787,206 students (45.9%), followed by 388,733 in middle school (22.7%), and 539,092 in high school (31.4%).
Chronic absenteeism persists across Georgia schools after the pandemic, as 20.7% of students missed at least 10% of school days in 2024, per the Georgia Department of Education. In reaction, the state agency launched a statewide strategy, rolling out a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness initiative, and targeted help for districts with the highest need to bolster attendance rates.
Georgia lawmakers enacted legislation in 2025 updating school attendance rules, now prohibiting expulsions based solely on absenteeism. The new law also enforces additional reporting mandates and aligns with alternative diploma pathways for students.
By 2026, Georgia’s average student-to-teacher ratio was about 14:1, surpassing the national average of 15:1.
