Sumter County Middle School issued the following announcement on Oct. 27.
Sumter County Middle School (SCMS) Agriculture students and Future Farmers of America (FFA) organization members Travin Jordan, Ter'Kaevian Rush, and Khaden Majors were recently featured on the State of Georgia Agricultural Education’s web page while at a statewide leadership rally in Perry, GA. The SCMS FFA Pollinator Project “BEE CAUSE” t-shirts are well known, as students seek to share the health benefits of honey and the importance of our pollinators in food production. Active members share the story at local events such as Americus First Friday Night Events, Local Farmers Market, and Friends of Jimmy Carter events in Plains. The local FFA Chapter has included a tribute to the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail, Inc in their honey promotion project. Executive Director Virginia Wise has been helpful in guiding the students in choosing pollinator friendly plants for the school garden which has led to a successful Monarch Butterfly attraction. Agriculture students saw the life stages of the butterfly, also an important pollinator, and witnessed Monarchs hatching in the classroom. The butterflies were released by students as they were ready for flight.
