Sumter County Middle School issued the following announcement on Nov. 19.
Mr. Brock's Agriculture students at Sumter County Middle School combine math and agriculture skills to make soap. Agriculture students learn real-world skills through cross-curricular math lessons as they study percentages, basic needs, and sustainability. Students are taught the importance of knowing what is in the products they use in everyday life. As students work through calculating percentages, they learn the base ingredients in common hand soap made in Sumter County Middle School Agriculture is 34% olive oil, 33% coconut oil, and 33% palm oil. Percentage calculation is part of our seventh grade math standards and Agriculture standards require students to make connections among mathematical ideas and other disciplines.
