Albany Technical College issued the following announcement on Feb. 17.
In December 2021, Hyekyung "Hannah" Seo came on board under the Business division as the new Program Chair/Instructor for Accounting at Albany Technical College (ATC). Mrs. Seo is new to Albany Technical College, but she is not new to the area. She has lived here for over 20 years.
She and her husband moved to the United States from South Korea to get his Ph.D. in chemistry about three decades ago, and they have resided in Leesburg for the past 20 years. While raising and educating two sons in the Albany region, Mrs. Seo continued her education in the hopes of becoming a professor, which had always been her ambition.
Mrs. Seo said, "I worked for five years in the accounts receivable department in the early 1990s, and it was there that I realized accounting was a good fit for me so, despite having a bachelor's degree in Library & Information Science from Korea's ChonNam National University, I pursued a master's degree in business administration and a master's degree in accounting." She graduated from Georgia Southwestern State University with an MBA in 2008 and then received her MAcc degree from Kennesaw University in 2015.
"While in graduate school, I served as a principal of Korean School of Columbus 2009- 2015 for six years. The Korean school in Columbus offers weekend sessions for pre-K to college students interested in learning the Korean language and culture. I redesigned the school's curriculum and program, hired teachers, and handled business with the Korean General Consulate in Atlanta, as well as all other administrative matters," stated Mrs. Seo.
Mrs. Seo taught accounting classes at Albany State University Cordele Center (previously Darton State College) for a year from 2015 to 2016 until ASU and Darton merged. That teaching experience provided her with both teaching and learning opportunities. "I've always wanted to teach again since it's such a rewarding experience not only to see students improve and achieve their goals but also feeling like I'm continuously learning and growing as an instructor and a person."
Before being hired at Albany Tech, she enjoyed operating a retail business for five years. She said this job was very team-oriented, and one of the critical parts of the job was ongoing hiring and training of new team members and continuing to educate current team members. Mrs. Seo feels this helped increase her leadership skills and realized that transformational leadership is the best for great teamwork. In addition, she says she learned about skills for customer service, which is always unpredictable and dynamic.
"I sincerely hope that I am constantly learning, helping, and loving what I am doing at Albany Tech," said Mrs. Seo.
